UAE Innovation Challenge Competition 2015

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) today announced the launch of the flying competition for the 2015 Innovation Challenge for Emirati students, held in collaboration with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Investments (ADASI). The competition will take place April 21-22 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi and is open to the public.

The UAE Innovation Challenge began in 2011, and introduced a ‘Learn by Doing’ philosophy to HCT students. The programme gives them the opportunity to design, build and fly unmanned aircraft under the guidance of Northrop Grumman mentors, who have traveled to campuses the past four months to assist each team in preparation for the competition. With a record number of participating teams, 15, the 2015 Innovation Challenge reflects a growing interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Doug Raaberg, chief executive of Northrop Grumman UAE, commented: “Northrop Grumman is committed to the advancement of STEM education in the UAE. Innovation Challenge remains an excellent platform for this, and we are proud to see its growth each year. This is a unique opportunity for the UAE’s young men and women to explore new career paths, which will ultimately enhance the UAE’s global competitiveness. We are grateful for the enthusiasm and dedication of our partners, HCT and ADASI, in driving this forward.”

Dr. Abdullatif, vice chancellor of HCT, said: “As Innovation Challenge continues to evolve, we take pride in seeing our students’ passion in STEM education. The Innovation Challenge with Northrop Grumman allows our students to apply their knowledge in a hands-on, engaging experience. We look forward to seeing our students compete in another successful competition.”

Ali Al Yafei, Chief Executive Officer of ADASI, said: “ADASI is proud to be a partner of the UAE innovation challenge competition once again this year alongside HTC & Northrop Grumman. This competition presents a professional platform in fostering innovation by opening its doors annually, to enable engineering students to showcase their capabilities and achievements on the ground. We will continue to encourage our youth to explore new opportunities through the innovative and critical challenges that will be presented to them.”

During the competition, each of the participating teams will be evaluated based on an oral presentation about the design and build of their unmanned aircraft, as well as on the aircraft’s flight. The winning team will be announced at an April 23 awards ceremony at HCT Dubai Men’s College, and will receive an all-expense paid trip to the United States, where they will tour Northrop Grumman facilities and educational institutions to further advance their STEM knowledge. The second place team will receive an educational trip to Europe, courtesy of ADASI.

At ADASI, we are the first in the UAE to deliver a comprehensive range of services that span the entire continuum of autonomous systems.
